Choosing The Right Ativan Dosage With Your Doctor

If you have never taken Ativan before, the most sensible thing to do is visit your doctor and enquire about the drug. As with almost every drug in existence these days, you need to be careful that any substances or medications which you are currently taking do not interact in an adverse way with Ativan, and therefore cause unwanted side-effects.

However, it is not just interactions that you should be concerned about. Given the nature of Ativan, each and every available Ativan dosage is applicable to a specific issue or symptom. Therefore, it would be reckless if you were to simply pick and choose a dose, without the proper consultation process needed to work out exactly what it is that you need to take Ativan for.

Working Out The Correct Ativan Dosage

Ativan dosages ranged from between 1 mg and 10 mg daily. Whilst 1 mg may seem like very little, you need to keep in mind that Ativan is a very potent drug, capable of mind altering action at extremely low doses. In many cases, 10 mg per day is a huge Ativan dosage - and will only be prescribed where absolutely necessary.

The most common dose is between 2 mg a day and 6 mg per day. In general, the largest portion of this dose is taken before bedtime, so that if the patient is indeed affected by sedation or any other effects caused by the drug, they will not be adversely effected during their work day or during their leisure time.

Additionally, whilst Ativan is indicated for use in the treatment of insomnia, the benefit of sedation is simply a side-effect of the mechanism by which the drug works. Hence, this is why other sleeping aids are prescribed before Ativan - if your only issue is getting to sleep.

Altering The Ativan Dosage

Because of the potential for some users to abuse and get hooked on Ativan, your doctor will properly prescribe you the lowest dose possible to begin with. Starting on this, they will gradually raise the dose until you feel that you are taking a dosage which is complementary to your needs.

If you feel that the dose of Ativan you are currently taking is insufficient, head back to your doctor and have a chat with them about changing or altering the Ativan dosage which you are currently prescribed. You may find that with even the smallest change, positive effects can be felt.
